SLATE Conference 2009 - Get Connected!

In only a few short weeks, nearly 200 individuals representing over 50 institutions will converge on the University of Chicago for the 7th Annual SLATE Conference. The SLATE Conference is an annual event presented by the Midwest Blackboard Users Group and hosted by the University of Chicago. This conference invites all faculty, system administrators, CIO's, Web developers, instructional designers, librarians, students, and user support staff from institutions that are deploying and/or currently using any Web-based tools, applications or programs, in their teaching and learning. One of the many goals of this conference is to provide a forum where all participants are able to connect, gather ideas, and find opportunities for future collaboration.

Before, during, and after the conference, there are many ways to connect! We're created a few social networking opportunities using some of the most popular social networking tools. Feel free to begin connecting now using any of the following tools:
  • Facebook: Join the SLATE '09 group in Facebook to connect with other conference attendees, share photos, videos, and links to resources shared during the conference.

  • Twitter: Tag all your conference-related tweets using the hashtag #slate09 to add your tweets to the conference-related conversations via Twitter. Also, follow @slategroup on Twitter for conference news and updates as well as monthly SLATE Group meeting notices and notes.

  • Twubs: Twitter group built around content aggregated from the conference hashtag, #slate09, is available at http://twubs.com/slate09. Those tweeting during the conference, please also join the conference Twub! Members can easily tweet conference-related photos, videos, and links that will automatically be tagged with the conference hashtag and aggregated with other conference-specific social media.

  • SlideShare: Are you a conference presenter or vendor? Upload you presentation to SlideShare and then add it to the SLATE '09 event on SlideShare to share with attendees

  • Delicious: If you are using a social bookmarking tool like Delicious to keep track of resources during the conference, use the tag slate09 to share your conference-related bookmarks with others

  • Other social networking tools: Use the tag slate09 whenever posting to other online social networking tools. If you have other tools that you recommend for the SLATE Conference, leave a comment here with your suggestions!
Let's get connected! We look forward to seeing you at the conference and to connecting online.

Blackboard Learn 9 - Trials & tribulations
Presented by: Ed Garay, University of Illinois at Chicago, Room 604

Upgrading to Blackboard Learn Release 9 has broad implications across an entire institution :: a new modern and flexible, yet, significantly different user interface for a totally new Web 2.0 teaching and learning environment, requiring careful planning, system performance fine-tuning, content migration, and instructor/student retraining. The University of Illinois at Chicago is currently running a pilot of Blackboard 9 along with an ambitious training program, in preparation to a complete migration to Blackboard 9 in late December.

Blogger Beware: Teaching with Blogs Best Practices
Jason Rhode, Northern Illinois University, Room 600

Blogs have become common tools for communicating and collaborating online. While setting up a blog takes only in a matter of minutes, effectively incorporating blogs into online teaching requires purposeful planning and structuring of activities to leverage the power that blogging brings to the learning environment. This session will share the experiences of incorporating instructor and student blogs into an online course as well as practical recommendations for those considering utilizing blogs in online learning. Sample instructor and student blogs as well as activities designed specifically for blogs will be reviewed.
