December 2010 SLATE Meeting

This is a reminder that our next monthly SLATE meeting will be on Wednesday, December 15th beginning @ 9:50am and hosted by Roosevelt University.  We will be meeting in the Auditorium Building, room 232.  The Auditorium Building (Chicago Campus) is located at 430 S. Michigan Avenue - the corner of Michigan Avenue and Congress Parkway.  So that Roosevelt can prepare for our visit, it is very important that you RSVP back to me by next Monday, December 13th with the names of those who will be attending from your institution.  Additional information on parking, train schedules, etc. is at the end of this message.

Main Agenda – Sprint and the Mobile Learning Revolution in Education
Colleges and Universities are constantly searching for partners who can handle their demanding and distributed environments. By choosing Sprint, you get a complete package of tailored solutions and innovations from a company with a strong history of supporting institutions. Find out why so many educational institutions have chosen Sprint to meet their unique needs.

Join Sprint at the December 15th SLATE meeting to learn how universities are using Sprint solutions to help overcome technology challenges including Mobile Learning Solutions, Wireless Solutions for Campus, Mobile Broadband Options and Student eLearning Devices. We will focus on our existing relationship with Blackboard and our latest device for learning, the Samsung Galaxy Tab with Android.

Additionally what has become a SLATE tradition...

Once again this year - after our meeting, we will take some time to enjoy and celebrate the holiday season with our friends and colleagues - by having a White Elephant Gift Exchange.  The term white elephant refers to a gift whose maintenance cost exceeds its usefulness.  In the "WeGe", gifts are wrapped, anonymous - are typically inexpensive, humorous items, or used items from home.  In the past some people have been pretty creative - and there are always a couple a really good surprises too...!!!  So I hope everyone will participate and bring a gift to exchange.

If you have any questions please let me know.  Hope to see you there.

PLEASE NOTE – SLATE meetings are now streamed live online!

If you are unable to attend in person – the monthly SLATE meetings are now streamed live thanks to our friends at Wimba – we are using Wimba Classroom.

Additional information of note

Traveling by Car
The Auditorium Building (Chicago Campus) is located at 430 S. Michigan Avenue (at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Congress Parkway). From other expressways turn onto the eastbound Eisenhower Expressway which becomes Congress Parkway. If you park in the Auditorium Garage across Congress Parkway from the university you should stamp your ticket in the RU lobby to get your discount. You can also self-park in the City of Chicago Grant Park South Underground Garage (cross Michigan Avenue and turn north around the circle to enter the garage).

Traveling by Train

METRA offers full schedule information on their web site.

From the suburbs, you'll take METRA trains to the Loop.  The station at which you arrive depends on your starting location:
  • trains from the northern and northwestern suburbs arrive at the Ogilvie Transportation Center (formerly the Northwestern Station) on the corner of Madison St. & Canal St.
  • trains from the western and some southwestern suburbs arrive at Union Station, at 210 S. Canal
  • trains from the south arrive at the Randolph Street Station
Getting to the Auditorium Building:
  • From Ogilvie and Union Stations, it's about 1.2 miles to the Auditorium Building.  Walk east towards the lake to Michigan Ave., and then south to Roosevelt University at the corner of Michigan and Congress.
  • From the Van Buren Street Station, you'll exit on Michigan Avenue.  Walk one block south to Roosevelt University at the corner of Michigan and Congress.

CTA/EL Train

From locations within the city, you can take the EL to the Loop.  The closest station to the university depends on the El line you take:
  • Red Line – Jackson subway station, on State St. between Jackson St. and Van Buren Street
  • Brown, Green, Orange, Pink, and Purple Lines – Library elevated station on Van Buren St. just west of State St., on the north side of the Harold Washington library
  • Blue Line – Jackson subway station, on Dearborn St. just north or south of Jackson St.

Traveling by Bus

The Chicago Transit Authority operates many buses that serve both downtown Roosevelt locations.  The best way to plan your trip is to use the CTA Trip Planner, available here.
