February 2012 SLATE Meeting

This is an exciting year for SLATE. We are celebrating 10 years as a group. Many exciting events, meetings, and changes are being planned throughout the year so I hope you will be able to participate in them. Watch for additional information as it becomes available. This is a reminder that our first monthly SLATE meeting of 2012 will be held Wednesday, February 15th beginning @ 10:00am and hosted by Waubonsee Community College. We will be meeting in the Event Room of the Academic and Professional Center (APC). For additional information click on the map link below. So that Waubonsee can prepare for our visit, it is very important that you RSVP back to Ken Sadowski by Monday, February 13th with the names of those who will be attending from your institution.

Main Agenda – Delivering Developmental Education - Bb and a K12 Inc. Partnership
Every year millions of young adults stride onto their local college campus with aspirations of obtaining a college degree. But even though most of those new enrollees graduated from high school, nearly 60 percent will have to take a remedial class before earning college credit. For most students, these remedial classes do not lead to a college degree or certificate. Studies have shown that three out of every four students who take remedial classes will not graduate within eight years compared to 40 percent of students not required to take remedial courses.

To help institutions address this problem, Blackboard is now providing an alternative model for delivering developmental education--Blackboard Developmental Education (“DevEd”). Blackboard has partnered with K12 Inc, the leading virtual public and private school provider, to deliver instructor-led, highly engaging online courses that can be scaled to augment or replace existing sections of traditionally delivered developmental programs. DevEd is clearly differentiated from existing remedial programs, many of which consist of courseware that can be utilized by students who are enrolled in traditional offline remedial classes.

Blackboard DevEd is a scalable and standardizable solution which offers individual learning paths to students. DevEd combines all of the key components of a highly effective learning environment and includes premium instruction, content, campus-based mentoring and an afterhours tutoring hotline, all supported by a hosted implementation of Blackboard’s learning management system, synchronous collaboration software, multi-modal messaging capabilities and 24X7 student helpdesk. Initial pilot implementations have shown that Blackboard DevEd can provide a cost savings of hundreds of dollars per enrollment while improving student retention and completion.

This session will include a discussion of the challenges facing typical models of developmental education and possible options to address these challenges. An overview of Blackboard DevEd along with case studies and third party market research results will be shared.
