April 2014 SLATE Meeting Final Reminder

Main Agenda Item

Competency-based Learning

Competency-based learning (CBL) is an emerging model that is gaining traction and can offer learners an efficient, less costly path to a college credential, increased employability, and enhanced professional skills. This is particularly the case for those 36 million Americans who have achieved significant prior learning and/or some college education but have not completed a degree.  CBL provides a framework for defining learning objectives and shifting the focus to mastery of these objectives rather than “seat time.”
Blackboard has recently acquired MyEdu, a user-friendly platform used by students to simplify their paths to degrees and create stronger connections between higher education and the workforce.  This session will provide definitions and a framework for understanding the ecosystems that make CBL and badges a powerful, valuable combination and discuss how institutions can leverage this online platform to enable students to capture and validate skills/competencies and then align with workforce demand..

In addition, representation from Flat Knowledge will be on hand to discuss their first of its kind, mobile ready competency-based education platform with simulations, adaptive learning and social learning technology to name a few features.
