December 2013 SLATE Meeting

Main Agenda Item   Advising Online Students In 2004, The Sloan Consortium predicted a 25% growth rate in students taking at least one online course.  For online learning outcomes to be judged as equivalent or superior to face-to-face instruction, institutions must evaluate and move forward in how they advise online students. Based on the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) best practice in advising, the panel will present and then discuss: Student preparedness for online learning The Institution’s preparedness for online learning Technologies available Sample advising syllabi for online learners Additional Activities White Elephant Gift Exchange During lunch, we will continue the tradition of having our annual White Elephant Gift Exchange, as we take some time for fun and friendship. A white elephant gift exchange is a holiday party game which usually results in playful rivalries between players trying to get sought after gifts. Each participant will supply one wrapped gift, typically inexpensive (value of at least $5), humorous item or unused item from home.  The goal of a white elephant party is usually to entertain rather than to gain. I hope everyone will choose to participate in the gift exchange.
